The Clario Story

Here at Clario, we have developed a unique tool for radiologists—workflow management software. Our software allows radiologists to reconstruct their workflow with our comprehensive worklist, portal and practice management tools, making their day-to-day operations and patient care more productive and efficient.

You may be wondering how such a cool idea came about. Clario was founded by the intersection of two ideas, application hosting and radiology department quality programs.

Early 2000's

What is application hosting? In short, application hosting was a simple idea in the 2000’s–build medical imaging applications to display or process images, which can plug into any application “host” that supports the API.

2005

The next idea emerged in 2005, when Seattle Children’s Hospital began building a radiology department quality system. This system was entirely web based and integrated into the standard PACS/RIS workflow at the hospital. It silently monitored every exam through its lifecycle, storing the data in a SQL database. This allowed for the extraction of powerful metrics that were previously unavailable. The system served as a search tool for research projects, as well as a way for functions like peer review and critical test report management to be integrated into department workflow.

2008

Clario Begins: In 2008 Clario licensed the software from Seattle Children’s Hospital with the idea of enhancing this software with the application hosting concept. We decided to turn the system into a “unified worklist” that could launch multiple PACS and specialty medical imaging applications. This product would serve the needs of large radiology groups and hospital systems.

2011

Vision is Refined: We were solving workflow problems immediately, but we quickly attracted attention from radiologists who were frustrated with the lack of attention workflow received from the big PACS vendors. There were many PACS vendors, but none were putting work into building a great workflow component as they were focused on the display and archiving parts of the system.  As a company focusing on workflow, we realized we could do one job really well, and build the best workflow management system available.

2013

Market Interest in Deconstructed PACS builds: While we have been improving workflow, a new type of archive (called a VNA) was catching on.  Thin client viewers were also getting better and better. The development of these two technologies, combined with a unified worklist, created new opportunities for radiology departments to recreate their IT infrastructure.

2016

Deconstructing and reconstructing PACS: We are now deconstructing and reconstructing PACS systems on a regular basis. We have integrated with nearly 40 PACS systems and have sites that are launching multiple PACS, viewers and voice recognition applications from our worklist. We believe we are in the midst of redefining radiology IT technology and preparing it to address the challenges created by the accountable care model.

2017

To share is to give better care: We took Clario’s technology to the next level by giving non-competitive radiology groups the power to share resources. Clario’s commitment to a web-based design has laid the groundwork for Clario to provide interoperability between Clario systems over the internet. By connecting multiple Clario systems using RESTful web services, radiology groups can provide over flow coverage, subspecialty coverage, and operations support for each other. Each Clario customer decides how and when to share work.
